António Gouveia began painting as a child, finding in it a way to make sense of the world around him. It was at Cecília Menano's atelier in Santos, Lisbon, that he first understood what painting could truly be. That early encounter shaped everything that followed. He kept painting, kept exploring, and gradually found his own path through the work.

His path was never linear. The rawness of cubism, the dreamlike freedom of surrealism, the structural rigour of Picasso, the luminous colour of Monet, the symbolic poetry of Chagall, the geometric abstraction of Kandinsky and the bold visual language of the great Portuguese masters Almada Negreiros and Amadeo de Souza Cardoso all left their mark. Inspired by these references but always driven by his own curiosity, António spent years in deep creative exploration, learning the fundamentals of composition and colour theory while constantly pushing into territory that was entirely his own. He believes that this kind of personal exploration is as important as technical mastery.

For António, painting has never been about reproducing what is visible. It is about reaching for what cannot be seen.

That long process of self-discovery has led him here. The backbone of his paintings are what he calls Labirintos, the first lines drawn before anything else exists, the point from which everything grows and evolves.

António is now fully committed to exploring the relationship between the natural and the human-made, to creating representations of the world that ask the oldest questions. What are we, beneath everything we have built around ourselves? What remains when you strip away the structures, the roles, the noise? He is drawn to diversity, to the idea that wherever you go, everything is different, complex and full of stories. His work is an attempt to hold all of that at once, the organic and the geometric, the personal and the universal, the world as it is and the world as we have made it.
